The Saudi Food and Drug Authority published on its official account on the social networking site Twitter some information about the percentage in the Kingdom.

The authority indicated in its publication that the obesity rate across the Kingdom reached 59.4% of the age 15 and over for both men and women.

In turn, she indicated that 30.7% suffer from overweight, while 28.7% suffer from obesity.

The authority also confirmed the following most important figures:

  • 9.3% of the obese are in the school category
  • 6% of the obese rate was among those under school age.

The authority stated that the risk of obesity spreading in the Kingdom stems from the health risks associated with it, which are:

  • Having diabetes
  • Increased risk of heart disease
  • Increasing the incidence of infection
  • Increased risk of arthritis
  • Increasing the chances of developing different types of cancers.

The authority explained the difference between overweight and obesity, which includes the following:

  • Overweight: BMI greater than or equal to 25
  • Obesity: a body mass index greater than or equal to 30.
